Let the Games Begin

This picture below sums up how the meet seemed to go all that marvellous afternoon. Look very carefully and far back down the track. That guy is in second place and, better, he is in Vic. High livery. The Vic. High track coach is the one there on the field. Do you see him? He's the one throwing away his stopwatch and taking out a calendar!

The next runner is very much in second place. He's in Esquimalt livery. The third place runner is another Oak Bay fellow. The Vic. High runnier is either 4th or 5th.

Why did those other guys back down the track bother to come out?

Wow! Look at this. This superb Hewlett Packard scanner has provided enough resolution on this ancient 35mm frame to allow us to read the score at this point in the competition from the frame above. Mount Doug. Has 21 ¾, Vic. High has 44, Esquimalt has 69 ¼ and Oak Bay has 119 ¾.

Here's yet another race thoroughly won.

The ladies didn't disappoint, either.

Another win, below. All we can see here of number two is his shadow. Take a look at the finish line judges. Isn't that dude in the conservative Hawaiian shirt the learned Ernie Costain? Improbably Ernie wore a similar shirt to the evening reception given by the reunion committee at UVic in 1988. De gvstibvs non dispvtandvr.

Look carefully at the figure beside Costain. Isn't that fellow in the cool shades the newly wed Mr. Orr? Though he and the author did not always see eye to eye on certain details of English grammar, at least Mr. Orr was always attired as a gentleman. Mr. Orr also refrained from occupying class time by relating the specifications and other technical details of his new house.

Ernie Costain's likeness here raises yet another memory. This one of a hot drowsy summer afternoon in Mr. Costain's Latin 92 class. The desk behind was occupied by Bernd Schalke, who appears early in the School Life pages. The author was endeavouring to stay awake to listen to the lecture when he felt a pushing from behind on his shoulder. With mumbled instructions, Bernd directed the author to shift over a little bit in his seat so that Bernd was hidden from Ernie. Bernd then put his head down on his arms. While Ernie droned on at the front of the room, Bernd snoozed!
