Inter High Track Meet

"Ok, let's go Oak Bay
Let's drive on to victory
And we'll show them how it's done
Again and again, rah, rah, rah...
"Our team's got all the fight...
something something something"
Let's have a look at some athletic doings. The Inter High Track Meet of 1963 was held at Vic. High, the biggest high school in the Victoria area at the time. Oak Bay, a much smaller school, beat Vic. High that day and quite literally on their own turf, too! Here are some pictures from that occasion.
The old negs have been cleaned up and enhanced but are, ahh, short of technical perfection. Kindly allow the grain in these old negs to be blurred a little by that fog of nostalgia!
The day of the Inter High meet came and the sun shone down upon us in fact and metaphor. O.B.H.S. athletes appeared in immaculate white and the cheerleaders appeared in immaculate white and the Oak Bay athletes triumphed.
Well, we all know who the leader of the cheerleaders was that year! Here's Jane Bowering (front) with her girls rousing the O.B.H.S. forces in the stands.

In the background is the Edwardian edifice of Vic. High. This is the west wall of the building and it overlooks the playing field. Around the field is a track, controversial when it had been put in because of its price. That track passes just in front of Jane and beside the wall.
Sitting on top of the wall and looking back at the O.B.H.S. cheerleaders are the Vic. High cheerleaders (dark sweaters). They have just completed their routine. They were to have a tough job this day. The spectators in the stands in front of the cheerleaders and to their right are the Vic. High supporters. As the afternoon progressed and Oak Bay athletes rolled up the points, the enthusiasm of those supporters was to wane. They melted away and left their athletes alone with their ignominy.
Look at this gem! Don Peden has sent along, 20130607, a copy of the program from that day. Here's the front page:
